One of America's Favorite Golf Oases
In its June 2005 issue, Conde Nast Traveler magazine featured the "Top 100" golf resorts in North America, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Ireland, and Scotland. The Greater Phoenix area has the second-most golf resorts listed for a destination, second only to Maui.

The results of the magazine's 10th annual survey were based on readers' opinions on course design, speed of play, rooms, service, dining options, and other facilities at the resorts. Each score represented the percentage of more than 1,500 subscribers who rated a particular feature excellent or very good.

Courses that made the list include The Phoenician, JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa, Four Seasons Resort at Troon North, the Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, and the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa. The Phoenician and Boulders Resort and Golden Door Spa have appeared on the list 10 years running.

The number of courses and challenging links, 325 days of sunshine a year, a spectacular backdrop of stark mountain peaks and Sonoran Desert scenery and sunsets, and a variety of housing in all price ranges make the Valley of the Sun the ideal spot for the golfer looking for a primary or secondary residence. In fact, Mesa, Arizona, one of the Valley's 24 cities, has been ranked as a "Hot Spot for Second-Home Living" by Golf Magazine. (The others are Jackson County, North Carolina; Prescott, Arizona; and Naples, Florida.) The fact that Greater Phoenix, the fifth-largest city in the U.S., is a major tourist destination also adds to its livability, because numerous fine restaurants, shopping areas, and recreational spots cater to visitors as well as residents.

Golf by the Numbers
According to the Greater Phoenix Convention & Visitors Bureau, 11 million rounds of golf are played annually and statistics show that more than two million visitors and 500,000 residents spend more than $1.5 billion on golf and related products each year.

"One of the many reasons visitors keep the Greater Phoenix destination top-of-mind is the 200-plus golf courses," according to Douglas MacKenzie, director of the Greater Phoenix Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Coupled with the number of Five-Diamond resorts in the area, Greater Phoenix is a golfer's dream. No wonder we've been dubbed the 'Golf Capital of the World.'"

In addition, three pro golf tournaments make regular stops in Phoenix: The Phoenix Open (PGA), the Standard Register Turquoise Classic (LPGA), and The Tradition (Senior PGA).

The Booming Economy
The golf industry isn't the only reason Greater Phoenix is thriving. The Valley of the Sun is a $50 billion marketplace driven by technology. World-ranked companies such as Motorola, Intel, Honeywell, Avnet, AlliedSignal, and Boeing have chosen the area for their corporate or regional headquarters. Other companies with major operations in Phoenix include Prudential, American Express, Charles Schwab, STMicroelectronics, Phelps Dodge, Sumitomo Sitix, and the Mayo Clinic.
Moving to Phoenix
If you're looking to buy into the country club lifestyle, the Valley of the Sun is for you. "Today, all but a very few Arizona golf courses are linked in some way to real estate," according to the Official Arizona Golf Guide & Directory (a publication of the Southwest Section PGA). "These venues offer opportunities for the private-club experience at every level and lifestyle, from young adult family and retirement communities to ultra-exclusive enclaves. Membership policies run the gamut from open annual golf privileges to invitation only, and equity and transfer arrangements are as varied."

You will pay a premium to live right on the golf course as opposed to elsewhere in a golf community. The bare minimum for a condo on a course is about $250,000. In the higher-end communities you won't find a house on a course for less than $1 million. These homes also have better resale potential. "Many potential buyers won't look at anything that's not right on a course," one Phoenix real estate expert told us.
