Established in 1868, this world-class university was the first in the University of California system, which is why it is often referred to as simply “Cal.” Berkeley ranks first nationally in the number of graduate programs in the top 10 in their fields (97 percent of Berkeley’s programs made the top 10 list). It also ranks first nationally in the number of “distinguished” programs for the scholarship of the faculty (32 programs). Members of the faculty have won numerous prestigious awards, including Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, and membership in such organizations as the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Science, among others. Numerous Berkeley academicians have been Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellows, as well Fulbright Scholars. Indeed, UC Berkeley has such an internationally renowned reputation, it is quite difficult to be admitted. One recent entering freshman class, for example, had a median GPA of 4.29.
