It was named after Karlsbad, which is now in the Czech Republic because the mineral waters found in Carlsbad were similar to those in the famous European spa. This coastal community is located about 25 miles north of downtown San Diego and though its “Village,” which was charmingly renovated a couple of decades ago, dates back more than 100 years, the city was not incorporated until 1952. Carlsbad residents live in single and multi-family housing in a variety of community settings. But it’s not just a coveted place to live — it has also attracted business and industry over the last several years. Besides being home to a major regional shopping center, it has its own “Car Country” (more than two dozen dealerships), 25 hotels, high tech, multimedia and biomedical businesses, electronics, golf apparel, and equipment manufacturers plus several business and light industry parks.
The beautiful planned community of La Costa — which was annexed by Carlsbad and is therefore considered a part of the city — lies just south of Carlsbad. La Costa grew up around the famed La Costa Resort and Spa, which attracts dozens of celebrities seeking rest, exercise, or renewal, and has an international reputation as a golf and tennis proving ground.

The huge Plaza Camino Real mall has more than 140 stores, specialty shops, and restaurants. Right in front of Carlsbad’s famed flower fields are the Carlsbad Premium Outlets, where 90 stores offer clothing, home furnishings, and myriad other products in outlets such as Barneys New York and Coach. For a more laid-back shopping experience, you’ll want to check out downtown Carlsbad, or the Village, where you’ll find everything from beachwear to antiques to mementos on streets such as State, Grand, and Carlsbad Village. There are numerous cafes in this area, as well.

Carlsbad’s seven miles of beaches are popular for swimming, surfing, sunbathing, and fishing. The Carlsbad Seawall — located one block south of Carlsbad Village Drive and continuing south for nearly a mile to Tamarack Avenue — is great for strolling, jogging, or popping in for a drink at a tavern. The city is also blessed with three picturesque lagoons that are ideal for birdwatching and nature walks.

This lively city offers a mix of myriad annual and special events
from parades to chalk art festivals. The annual Carlsbad Village
Faire, held in the spring, is the largest one-day street fair
in the U.S., attracting more than 80,000 people and offering 850
vendors, children's rides, an old-fashioned pancake breakfast,
and more.
