Actor Leo Carillo and his family once made Rancho de los Quiotes (ranch of the Spanish daggers) their home. The city of Carlsbad has stabilized, preserved, and restored many of the buildings on a 27-acre parcel of the once 2,538-acre working ranch. The original ranch was constructed in the late 1930 and many of the building's designs were created by Carillo as he outlined the footprint of each in the dirt. He preserved the original walls of what was once another family's adobe on the property (built in the 1880s) and incorporated them into his main hacienda. The ranch is a designated local, state and national historic landmark. The historic structures you can see today include a visitor's center, the hacienda, reflecting pool, cabana, cantina, carriage house, tack shed, stable, barn, and foundry and equipment shed. Be forewarned: the ranch is located in the bottom of a lush canyon and you will need to walk extended distances up and down hillsides and on some uneven decomposed granite trails. The self-guided tour is about three-quarters of a mile. Guided tours are also available on weekends.
