This bucolic rural community of about 4,000 homes is one of Orange County's oldest planned communities. Over its 30-year lifespan, 2,200 acres of its 4,900 acres have remained as open space. In 2000, the Urban Land Institute chose Coto de Caza for its Excellence for a New Community award. It's an upscale community for people seeking privacy and luxury. Coto de Caza is about an hour's drive from downtown Los Angeles and about a half-hour's drive to the ocean at Huntington Beach. As the crow flies, it's 12 miles inland and is located in the canyon lands east of Mission Viejo. Other nearby cities/communities include Rancho Santa Margarita, Trabuco Canyon, Foothill Ranch, Lake Forest, El Toro, Laguna Hills, and Aliso Viejo. The name Coto de Caza translates from Portuguese as "preserve of the hunt." |

Within its gates, Coto de Caza has a General Store that offers convenience grocery items, deli sandwiches, and an old-fashioned soda fountain. Neighboring Rancho Santa Margarita offers the Mercado del Lago shopping center and the Rancho Santa Margarita Town Center and Marketplace. The Shops at Mission Viejo mall is about 20 minutes away.

In the heart of the community, the private Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club offers golf, tennis, and social memberships and attracts members not only from Coto but from surrounding communities, as well. The first private 36-hole country club in Orange County and one of only three in metropolitan Southern California, the golf facilities include two complete championship 18-hole golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The Rider's Cup Celebrity Golf Tournament is held here every October. The Club also features a 44,000-square-foot Craftsman-style clubhouse (with both casual and formal dining), nine lighted tennis courts, an Aquatics Center with three pools, a poolside snack bar, a complete fitness center, Jacuzzis, and golf and tennis pro shops.
Another popular venue is the 15-acre Coto Valley Equestrian Center, which features five riding arenas, two hot walkers, a bullpen, six turnouts, and stables for 160 horses. The community also provides more than 40 miles of hiking and riding trails.
Coto's 10-plus-acre sports and recreation park offers basketball courts, baseball fields, picnic facilities, play areas, and a sand volleyball court. The community offers a Candlelight Concert Series here in the summer.
