The Most Romantic Spot on the California Coast
Richard Henry Dana, Jr., called Capistrano Bay "the most romantic spot on the California coast." Capistrano Bay is now Dana Point, named for the Harvard-educated lawyer, seaman, and author whose journal documenting his voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California became the classic Two Years Before the Mast. Today's city of Dana Point, which was incorporated in 1989, encompasses three distinct communities including the original town of Dana Point plus Capistrano Beach and Monarch Beach. Dana Point prides itself for its nearly seven miles of coastal bluffs and hills along the Pacific Ocean. One of the most notable bluffs is called the "Headlands." It overlooks Dana Point Harbor, which has been called "one of the most significant man-made alterations of the Orange County coastline."
    Shopping and Dining
Probably the most popular place to shop and dine for residents and visitors alike is at Dana Point Harbor, which has 17 restaurants and 30 unique shops featuring everything from custom-made jewelry, Indian artifacts, art collectibles, handmade chocolates, and "green" gifts to art collectibles, leisure clothing, cards and T-shirts, sunglasses, toiletries, fragrant oils, designer perfumes and sunglasses, international coffees and teas, and high-quality ice cream.

    Recreation and Events
Dana Point Harbor has slips for more than 2,500 boats. Dana Point Harbor is also a popular place for sportfishing, parasailing, bicycling, and just strolling. Do take a gander at the nine-foot bronze statue of Richard Henry Dana gazing across the harbor. The harbor is also home to the Ocean Institute, which is dedicated to the protection of the marine environment and is a nationally recognized research and teaching facility. Finally, Dana Point Harbor is the gateway to Doheny State Park. One of the most popular beaches in Southern California, the 62-acre park offers surfing, bicycling, camping, picnicking, tidepool exploration, and a range of other ocean activities.

Annual events in Dana Point include the Festival of Whales in March, a Fourth of July fireworks show, and a Turkey Trot in November.
