The mission of the Ocean Institute is to inspire all generations through education to become responsible stewards of our oceans. The Ocean Institute, which has become a nationally recognized research and teaching facility, was founded in 1977 as the Orange County Marine Institute. Annually, it educates 80,000 students, 8,000 teachers, and 50,000 public visitors through more than 40 marine science and maritime history programs. The institute is located on 2.4 acres in the Dana Point Harbor, at the edge of the Pacific Ocean and adjacent to a Marine Life Refuge, making it an ideal site for hands-on learning about the sea. At the Ocean Institute, students, families, and the general public become tallship sailors, research scientists, oceanographers, and explorers during school-day and weekend programs.
