Today, the Del Mar Fairgrounds still host the county fair, which is one of the biggest fairs in the U.S.—attracting more than 1,200,000 people over its three-week run early in the summer. During the rest of the year, the grounds are leased out for home and garden shows, music festivals, antique fairs, sporting goods extravaganzas, dog and horse shows, and a wide variety of other events. The fairgrounds are also home to the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and offer a satellite wagering facility. The live horse racing season begins a few weeks after the San Diego County Fair closes. The fairgrounds and track are located 20 miles north of downtown San Diego.
