People say the San Diego Convention Center reminds them of a
grand cruise ship. Fact is, the 2.6-gross-square-foot center
is one of the world's most modern and technologically advanced convention
and meeting facilities. The original facility was opened in
November 1989. In September, 2001, it underwent an $216 million
expansion that roughly doubled its size. The bright white sails
atop the center's 90,000-square-foot Sails Pavilion have made
it the most recognizable landmark on San Diego's skyline. It's
located on 11 acres of San Diego bayfront and boasts spectacular
views of Downtown San Diego, San Diego Bay, Coronado, and Point
Loma. The San Diego Convention Center has as neighbors Petco
Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, and Seaport Village. It is one of
the region's most powerful economic engines, generating $10
billion in economic benefits since it opened. There are more
than 1,900 underground parking spaces.
