This museum, which opened in 2004, is just a walk down the Embarcadero
from the Maritime Museum. The largest of the five aircraft carrier
museums in the U.S., the Midway was launched in March 1945 and
was named for Battle Midway, which was a critical turning point
for the war in the Pacific during World War II. The Midway served
three combat tours in Vietnam and launched planes in the Gulf
War of 1991. When it was decommissioned in 1992, it was the
longest-serving carrier in U.S. Naval history. The museum features
many exhibits that depict the ship's long service.
