Little Italy

	Downtown San Diego's oldest continuous neighborhood business district, Little Italy spans some 45 blocks, but the heart of it is on India Street between Cedar and Grape streets. At one time, more than 6,000 Italian families lived in the area, building San Diego into the center of the world tuna industry. Trouble came with the decline of the tuna industry on the West Coast and with the destruction of about 35 percent of the neighborhood to make way for Interstate 5. After almost 30 years of decline, the neighborhood families and business owners took matters into their own hands in the early 1990s and began redevelopment. Today, Little Italy is one of the hottest residential spots in the county, with its low-rise lofts and condos and—increasingly—high-rises. The charming India Street business district is filled with popular cafes, delis, restaurants, boutiques, and bars, and the neighborhood sponsors art events, as well.
