Five Charming Communities
Situated along six miles of Pacific coastline in San Diego's North County, Encinitas is geographically stunning and diverse with its mix of beaches, cliffs, flat-topped coastal areas, steep mesa bluffs, and rolling hills. Founded over 100 years ago, and famed for its flower fields, the city of Encinitas, incorporated in 1986, is now comprised of five communities, each of which takes pride in its own distinctive character. Historic (or Old) Encinitas runs along the Coast Highway (Highway 101) Corridor next to the beaches and the ocean. East of Interstate 5, New Encinitas is centered on El Camino Real, which translated as "The King's Highway," and was founded by early Spanish missionaries. Artsy, laid-back Leucadia is north of Old Encinitas and is characterized by the towering eucalyptus trees that line its main thoroughfare, Coast Highway. Cardiff-by-the-Sea, south of Encinitas, is best-known for its rows of quaint houses overlooking the Pacific. A bit inland, Olivenhain (German for "olive grove") boasts plenty of open horse country and pastures and appeals to residents seeking a more rural way of life.
Beaches and Recreation
There are many popular beaches along Encinitas' six-mile coastline, including Moonlight State Beach in Old Encinitas and Leucadia State Beach. Many surfing contests are held throughout the year because of the excellent waves. A particular favorite beach with surfers from all over San Diego County is Swami's in Old Encinitas below Seacliff Roadside Park. It got its name from the Self-Realization Fellowship Hermitage and Meditation Gardens, located a few hundred yards north on Highway 101. Residents and visitors who golf will enjoy the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course, a championship 18-hole par 72 course that boasts panoramic ocean views.
A favorite shopping venue for residents and visitors alike is Downtown 101. This coastal shopping district is more than 100 years old and features historic architecture, charming shops, sidewalk cafes, and restaurants framed by beautiful flower baskets. Antique stores and charming coffee houses line the entire coast from Leucadia through Cardiff. You?ll find the strip malls and the "big box" stores east of Interstate 5, mainly along El Camino Real.
