San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve
One of San Diego County's largest coastal wetlands, the reserve encompasses about 900 acres of diverse habitat with six plant communities, including salt marsh, riparian scrub, freshwater marsh, coastal sage scrub, coastal strand, and mixed chaparral. Lying on the coast between the cities of Solana Beach and Encinitas (Cardiff, to be more exact) and extending inland to Rancho Santa Fe, this variety of habitats supports more than 300 species of plants, more than 20 species of fish, more than 20 species of reptiles and amphibians, more than 295 bird species (including 65 nesting), and 24 species of mammals. More than five miles of hiking trails in the reserve are open to the public. Public nature walks and tours are also available.
