La Paloma Theatre
It's name translates as "the dove" and this Encinitas landmark has a long and rich history. It opened in 1928 with the film "The Cohens and Kellys in Paris." Opening night was such a gala event that soon-to-be-a-major-star Mary Pickford is rumored to have ridden her bicycle all the way from Fairbanks Ranch just to be there. La Paloma was one of the first theaters to feature "talkies," but since the transition from silent films didn't happen overnight, the theater was also equipped with a pipe organ. Films in those days were usually preceded by a live vaudeville act, and La Paloma was famous for that.

Today, the theater offers both films and concerts. "The Rocky Horror Show," the cult classic, is shown every Friday at midnight. La Paloma has hosted concerts by a diverse group of artists, such as Loreena McKennitt, Nickel Creek, Ralph Stanley, Jerry Garcia, and Eddie Vedder.
