Take a drive down the mountains from Julian—experiencing stunning views along the way—to the 600,000-plus-acre Anza-Borrego State Park. The largest state park in California, it features 500 miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas, and miles of hiking trails, allowing visitors to experience the wonders of the Colorado Desert. The park is named after Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and the Spanish word borrego, or bighorn sheep. Along with the latter, you may also see roadrunners, golden eagles, kit foxes, mule deer, iguanas, chuckwallas, and (shudder!) the red diamond rattlesnake. You will also be treated to washes, wildflowers, palm groves, cacti, and sweeping vistas. The wildflower season usually begins in January and reaches its peak in March. The park offers a Visitor Center, located at the west end of Palm Canyon Road in the town of Borrego Springs. The Visitor Center offers information and publications plus a museum.
The park's two developed campgrounds are Borrego Palm Canyon and Tamarisk Grove.
