This flat, sandy beach has San Diego's gentlest waves during the summer, making it one of the most popular in Southern California for families, novice scuba divers, and people who just like to stroll along the sand. Approximately one mile long and adjacent to a residential area, the Shores has a playground at its southern end. Kellogg Park, a grassy area, is located behind the main lifeguard station and is ideal for picnickers (you can buy sandwiches and other foods in the small shopping area a few blocks east of the beach). A wide cement boardwalk parallels a portion of the beach between the park and the sand. The Shores has the only beachfront boat launch within the San Diego city limits. You can launch small vessels directly into the surf at the foot of Avenida de la Playa. Make sure you get to La Jolla Shores early during the summer—the 350-space parking lot fills to capacity by midday and on-street parking is limited.
