Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego
This is the larger of the two branches of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (the other is in downtown San Diego). Originally, an Irving Gill-designed residence was built on this site in 1916 for philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. Adjacent land was acquired over the years and the museum developed. Today, the 60,000-square-foot building—renovated in 1996—sits on almost three acres of prime oceanfront property and includes a lovely garden.

The permanent collection comprises more than 3,000 works in all media and genres created after 1950. The Museum counts among its greatest strengths minimalism and pop art of the 1960s and 1970s; conceptual art from the 1960s to the present; installation art; Latin American art; and art from California and the San Diego/Tijuana region. In addition to displaying the creations of well-known contemporary artists, the Museum has a reputation for collecting works by promising emerging artists and under-recognized mid-career artists.
