Mt. Helix is topped by an outdoor amphitheater open to the public. A trip up the winding road past the estates and villas is well worth it for the spectacular 360-degree views, especially on one of the crystal-clear days that San Diego experiences Santa Ana conditions. To the south, you can see to the hills of Mexico. To the west, you look across La Mesa, Mission Valley, and downtown San Diego all the way to San Diego Bay and the ocean. And to the north and east lie the El Cajon Valley and the rugged peaks of the Cuyamacas. The historic amphitheater seats 1,000 and is home to the San Diego Christian Youth Theater and Christian Community Theater, which present Broadway-style musicals. The amphitheater also offers a renowned Easter Sunrise Service. During the day, it's a great place to have a picnic. If you have kids, you'll appreciate the fact that all of the fun they have running up and down the stairs and bleachers will make an after-lunch nap a sure thing! Mt. Helix is easily accessible from Interstate 8 in the La Mesa area and easily identified by the towering 35-foot-tall white cross on the top of the mountain.
