East County's Lake Murray Reservoir is part of the Mission Trails Regional Park, which lies between the cities of San Diego, La Mesa, and Santee. The 5,800-acre urban park features hiking and mountain bike trails as well as the statuesque Cowles Mountain, which many San Diegans claim to have climbed. Lake Murray itself is shared by San Diego and La Mesa and is easily accessed from Interstate 8 via the Lake Murray Boulevard exit about a mile east of San Diego State University. This lake is extremely popular with joggers, bicyclists, walkers, and rollerskaters because of the picturesque, easy-going 3.2-mile road that winds around part of it. However, once you reach the dam gate, you must turn around and go back. There are lots of picnic tables and barbecues available (or bring your own). You can rent a pedal boat or canoe on days when fishing is allowed, which include Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday, and certain holidays from sunrise to sunset from November through Labor Day (the park is open for general recreation seven days a week year-round). Outboard motor rentals are also available as well as state fishing licenses, permits, food and beverages, and bait and tackle. Great for fishing—bluegill, channel catfish, trout, black crappie, and large mouth bass (and they're stocked from November to May).
