Adjacent to Hillcrest and just a couple of miles north of downtown San Diego, Balboa Park is San Diego's answer to Manhattan's Central Park, both in terms of its popularity and the variety of venues and activities. Comprised of more than 1,000 acres, the park offers garden, international culture associations, 15 museums, and, of course, our world-famous zoo. About 14 million people visit the park each year because of its horticultural, educational, historical, and recreational riches. Operated by the City of San Diego Park & Recreation Department, it's here you'll find displays of important art, animal species, world folk art, photography, model railroads, and rare aircraft—to name just a few of the things to set your sights on in the myriad museums (which are free one Tuesday per month on a rotating basis). All of this is set amidst rolling green lawns, groves of mature trees, splashes of seasonal flowers, and well-maintained paths. An extra delight for architecture aficionados: Many of the museums located in the Prado (Balboa Park's main street) occupy Spanish Colonial Revival buildings that were constructed for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition. That was the first time this pleasing, highly ornamental style had ever been used in the United States. The largest arts organization in San Diego, the Old Globe Theater, is also located in Balboa Park, and many famous Hollywood stars have performed there. On three stages, the theater offers at least 14 productions and 550 performances every year. And that's not all, by any means. This jewel of a park set right in the middle of an urban area also offers people of all ages playgrounds, picnic areas, lawn bowling, three leash-free dog parks, canyon trails for hikers, and a golf course.
