Old Town San Diego State Historic Park


Old Town was once the center of San Diego. But it began to decline as "New Town"—today's downtown San Diego—began to be built. It regained its to shine again when it was restored in 1969, San Diego's 200th birthday. Today's Old Town San Diego State Park, adjacent to Mission Hills, recreates life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. Part of the complex—which includes shops, restaurants, and a museum—includes five original adobes. La Casa de Estudillo is a mansion built around a garden courtyard. La Casa de Machado y Stewart contains artifacts that reflect ordinary life of the period. Other historic buildings include San Diego's first newspaper office, a blacksmith shop, a schoolhouse, and a stable with a carriage collection.
