This Kensington landmark has been a favorite for generations of film aficionados from all over San Diego. Built in 1946, it is one of the few single-screen theaters left in the county—sigh! Operated by Landmark Theatres (the nation's largest art-house chain) since 1975, it was the first theater to bring quality foreign films to San Diego. Today, the Ken offers a wide variety of films, from independent fare to foreign language cinema to restored American classics, and cult classics. The theater, which also hosts San DiegoĆs annual gay and lesbian film festival, is the only theater in San Diego that still runs on reel-to-reel carbon arc projectors. The Ken was refurbished with plush, comfortable seats in 2004.
