Cabrillo National Monument and Visitor's Center was named for
Cabrillo, the Portuguese explorer whose landing in the San Diego
Bay marked the first time Europeans arrived in the state that
was to become California. Standing at the highest point in the
Cabrillo Monument area is the old Point Loma lighthouse, a San
Diego icon since 1854. Nearby is the Whale Watch Lookout Point.
From December to February this is a great place to view gray
whales as they continue their 7,000-mile migration from Alaska
to the lagoons of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, where
they give birth to their calves. November through March is the
best time to explore Cabrillo's tidepool area. And the coastal
sage scrub is usually at peak bloom between February through
April. At any time of year, the views from Cabrillo are spectacular.
