When eucalyptus proved unsuitable for railroad ties early in Rancho Santa Fe's history, the railroad commissioned local architect Lilian Rice to create a community around the then quaint village plus a guesthouse for prospective land buyers. In her distinctive Spanish Colonial Revival style, she designed the many-roomed guesthouse that she called La Morada. Over the years it evolved gracefully into the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Today, it occupies 20 acres beautifully landscaped grounds, including flowering gardens, lush lawns, a golf course, and winding paths between cottages of tradionally furnished, wonderfully appointed guest rooms and suites.
