When neighboring Del Mar refused to upgrade their historic train
station in order to accommodate the "Coaster," San
Diego County's commuter line, Solana Beach stepped up to the
plate. The station, which also replaced Del Mar's for Amtrak
service, was designed by renowned local architect Robert Quigley.
Its striking design combines the World War II Quonset huts that
house several nearby businesses with high vaulted ceilings reminiscent
of venerable old European train stations. It has been honored
with international awards and has been featured in magazines
such as Architectural Digest. It is now the stop for
those who want to visit the Del Mar Fairgrounds and Race Track.
Bus service is available from the station for both of these
venues.
