Venice Canals
Venice was originally designed to look like Venice, Italy, canals and all. Under the direction of Venice town founder Abbot Kinney, the original 16 miles of canals were dug in 1904. With the invention of the automobile, however, the canals were not practical. In 1929, most of the canals were filled in and converted to roads. Few of the original canals remain today. In the 1960s the canals were home to artists and beatniks and then the hippies arrived. Jim Morrison of "The Doors" rock group lived in the canals during this period. Real estate prices skyrocketed in the 1970s and since then the canals area has become a very upscale and picturesque neighborhood. In 1994, the city of Los Angeles (to which Venice is annexed) refurbished the six remaining canals for $6,000,000. Gondola tours are available.
