Where Wealthy New Yorkers Summer
A handful of villages that dot the South Fork of eastern Long Island, approximately 100 miles from New York City, the Hamptons are home to celebrities and wealthy New Yorkers seeking respite from the heat and humidity of NYC summers. Mention "Hamptons" and you'll hear la-ti-da "oh-so-pretentious" comments from people who don't live there, but there is no disputing the beauty of the place with its endless white beaches and lush foliage, vestiges of its agricultural roots.
First up is the city of Westhampton, "party city." Next is the quiet village of Quogue, then Old-Line Southampton, the site of the oldest settlement of New York State. Next on the jam-packed Montauk Highway are Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, and Wainscott. When you hit a pond, you've found East Hampton, home of or former home of celebs such as Steven Spielberg, Martha Stewart, Billy Joel, among others. Then comes Amagansett, renowned for its farmer's market. Want a more low-key atmosphere? Try the charming sailor haunts of Sag Harbor and Shelter Island.
